Dermaplaning is a popular exfoliation treatment that removes dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the surface of the skin. The result is a smoother, brighter complexion that allows skincare products to penetrate more effectively and makeup to glide on effortlessly. However, because dermaplaning can leave the skin temporarily more sensitive, following an appropriate skincare routine post-treatment is crucial to maximizing benefits and minimizing potential irritation. With this in mind, we at Open Door Med Spa would like to offer an ideal skincare routine after a dermaplaning session.

Immediately After Dermaplaning

Gentle Care. After a dermaplaning session, your skin is in a delicate state. The top layer of dead skin has been removed, exposing fresh, new skin cells that are more susceptible to environmental stressors. To protect and nurture your skin:
Cleansing: Use a mild, hydrating cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils. Avoid using any harsh or abrasive cleansers, as they can cause irritation.
Toner: Opt for an alcohol-free toner that helps to balance the skin’s pH without drying it out. Ingredients like rose water or aloe vera are excellent choices due to their soothing properties.
Serum: Apply a hydrating serum rich in hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that draws moisture into the skin, keeping it plump and hydrated. This is particularly important after dermaplaning, as your skin may feel more dry or tight.

Moisturization

Locking in Hydration. Hydration is key after dermaplaning. Since the skin is freshly exfoliated, it can absorb products more effectively, making it the perfect time to focus on moisture retention.
Moisturizer: Choose a lightweight, yet deeply hydrating moisturizer. Look for products containing ingredients like ceramides, peptides, and niacinamide, which help to strengthen the skin barrier and lock in moisture.
Avoid Heavy Oils: While it might be tempting to use thick oils to moisturize, they can sometimes clog pores and cause breakouts on freshly exfoliated skin. Stick to non-comedogenic formulas.

Sun Protection

A Non-Negotiable Step. After dermaplaning, your skin is more vulnerable to UV damage. The removal of the top layer of skin cells exposes newer, more sensitive skin, making it imperative to protect it from the sun’s harmful rays.
Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even if you’re indoors. Physical sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often recommended post-dermaplaning because they’re less likely to irritate sensitive skin.
Reapplication: Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every two hours if you’re outdoors, and more frequently if you’re sweating or swimming.

What to Avoid

Giving Your Skin Time to Heal. While dermaplaning offers numerous benefits, it’s important to avoid certain products and activities that could compromise your results:
Exfoliants: Avoid using any other exfoliating products, such as scrubs, AHA/BHA acids, or retinoids, for at least a week after your treatment. Your skin needs time to heal, and additional exfoliation can lead to irritation and sensitivity.
Hot Water: Steer clear of hot water when washing your face or taking showers, as it can cause redness and exacerbate irritation. Opt for lukewarm water instead.
Heavy Makeup: Try to avoid heavy or full-coverage makeup for at least 24 hours after dermaplaning. This allows your skin to breathe and reduces the risk of clogging pores.

Continuing Care

Maintaining the Glow. In the days following dermaplaning, maintain a gentle skincare routine focused on hydration and protection. As your skin heals and adjusts, you can gradually reintroduce more active ingredients like retinoids or exfoliating acids, but only when your skin feels ready and shows no signs of irritation.
