There are many different types of laser treatments that are used to treat different types of medical conditions. One type of laser treatment is Intense Pulse Light Therapy which helps to correct a number of different conditions and primarily, the rejuvenation of the skin. For those who don’t know about the many uses for intense pulse light therapy, Open Door Med Spa would like to share more about this type of laser treatment and how it can help restore beautiful skin.

What is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL)?

Using an intense pulsed light device, which uses an array of visible light, we are able to correct a number of different skin conditions. The wavelengths of intense pulse light emits 400 nm up to 1200nm. The light is focused on a part of the skin which can absorb a particular wavelength, known as Chromophore. Chromophore work by targeting hemoglobin and the melanin which contains iron that is carried into the blood cells. Melanin is what produces the pigment of the skin and hair. When the intense pulsed light treatment is targeted to the hemoglobin, it can correct skin conditions such as redness of the skin as well as broken blood vessels. When the intense pulse light treatment is targeted on the melanin, it can correct age spots, sun spots, and skin discoloration.

Who Needs Intense Pulse Light Photofacial Therapy?

Most people can be a candidate for intense pulsed light therapy. However, those who most frequently seek out the procedure are those with redness of the skin, skin pigmentation, those with rosacea, acne scarring and aging skin. There is a small percentage of people who may not be able to get intense pulsed light therapy. There are those with photosensitivity conditions such as Lupus and porphyria that should avoid this particular type of treatment. Those who take certain medication should also avoid intense pulsed light therapy. Medication such as anti-malarial and tetracycline can have photosensitivity side effects. Those with photosensitivity due to a medical condition or medication may not be a good candidate for intense pulse light therapy.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy Recovery

After having intense pulsed light therapy, it is normal for patients to experience some redness and swelling for 24 to 48 hours. In most cases the patient can return to normal activities right after treatments. However, for more aggressive treatment, the redness and swelling can last 2 to 4 days. Depending on the reasoning behind the treatment, the skin can scab over or darken which is more common when treating age spots. It is important to protect the skin from the sun right after treatments. If possible stay out of the sun for a few days and wear sunscreen when going outside, at least until the skin is fully done recovering. When beginning intense pulsed light therapy, it is important to know that multiple treatments will be needed, averaging between 3 to 6 treatments. Be committed to do what is needed to allow your skin to properly recover. This may mean avoiding outdoor hikes, beaches and other vacationing activities.
