They also want to know if they should be using sunscreen to help prevent aging because they have heard conflicting things on the topic. Today we are going to spend some time talking about whether or not sunscreen really does help prevent aging.

Sunscreen is Important for Anti Aging

So does sunscreen truly prevent aging? Absolutely! Studies show that sunscreen also protects our skin from photoaging. Photoaging is the wrinkling spotting, and loss of elasticity that is caused by the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. One study followed over 900 participants for four years to discover their findings. In their study they put their study participants into four different groups. One group applied sunscreen to their head, neck, arms, and hands each morning and again after sweating or bathing. The second group applied the same sunscreen whenever they wanted to. Group three actually received a beta-carotene supplement each day. The last group was the placebo group. The participants in group one were 24% less likely to experience symptoms of aging skin.

What Does Sunscreen Do for Skin?

Sunscreen prevents your skin from damage caused by the sun’s rays by preventing sunburns, skin cancer, and premature aging. When you get sunburned it ages your skin. If you know someone that has spent hours out in the sun during their life you may notice that they have a leathery look to their skin. This is likely the cause of frequent sun tanning or sunburns. Using sunscreen can help prevent this from happening.

What Should I Look for when Buying Sunscreen?

If you want to help prevent aging you will definitely want to purchase some sunscreen. When you go to purchase your sunscreen you will likely be overwhelmed at all of the different options out there. You will want to buy a sunscreen that is a broad spectrum sunscreen. This means that the sunscreen will block out the UVA and UVB rays. You should also look for a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. After you make your purchase you will want to make sure that you apply it liberally every few hours when you are going to be out in the sun. If you go swimming or participate in activities that you sweat in you will want to reapply your sunscreen.
